I used this to load a pre-paid gift card into my account so I could apply it toward a purchase that was more than the amount of my gift card. This seems to be the only workable way to do that, since Amazon does not allow split payments.
I read reviews indicating that people have had major issues with this, so I was a bit concerned. In my case, though, it worked seamlessly.
I think there were two reasons for that:
1. I was only loading one single gift card into my account. I think if you try to load a few gift cards at a time it will trigger their fraud alerts and all bets are off.
2. I made the transaction for one penny less than the amount on my gift card. I’ve had issues where a prepaid gift card was declined when I tried to use the exact amount on the card, so rather than risk getting a decline and causing issues, I just transferred $49.99 rather than the full $50. Yes, that means I now have a card with $0.01 left on it, but I can handle that for a seamless transaction. (My time potentially troubleshooting issues is worth more than the penny I left behind.)
Keep in mind that the process is not immediate. I initially received an email that my purchase was being processed. Then 5 minutes or so later, I received another email that the transaction had been completed and my account had been reloaded. At that point I was able to make my purchase using the newly reloaded balance.
So don’t expect to complete this as you’re heading out the door on the way to the airport or anything. Figure you’ll spend anywhere from 5 minutes to 90 minutes waiting for the confirmation before you can use the funds. And if you have more than one gift card to load, I would highly recommend spreading the transactions out over at least a few days.
